Home / Partial Hospitalization Program
Sometimes weekly therapy is not enough, but residential or inpatient treatment may not be the right fit.
A Partial Hospitalization Program, commonly called PHP, provides a higher level of structure, clinical support, and therapeutic care while allowing you to return home or to supportive housing at the end of the day.
At Rainbow Hill Recovery, our Partial Hospitalization Program in Los Angeles provides comprehensive mental health and substance use treatment in a compassionate, inclusive environment. Our community welcomes people of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences, including LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.
Whether you are stepping down from a higher level of care or realizing you need more support than traditional outpatient therapy can provide, PHP can give you the structure, consistency, and clinical support needed to begin creating meaningful change.
A Partial Hospitalization Program is one of the most structured levels of outpatient treatment.
PHP provides many of the therapeutic and clinical services associated with a higher level of care while allowing clients to maintain greater independence outside of treatment hours.
At Rainbow Hill Recovery, PHP generally consists of approximately five hours of programming per day, five days per week, based on each client’s individualized treatment plan and clinical needs.
Instead of trying to fit recovery or mental health treatment into a single appointment each week, PHP creates dedicated time to focus on your mental health, recovery, relationships, coping skills, and overall wellbeing.
You receive significant support during the day without having to live at a treatment facility.
People rarely fit neatly into one diagnosis.
Mental health, trauma, substance use, relationships, family dynamics, grief, identity, and life experiences can overlap in complicated ways.
Rainbow Hill Recovery provides PHP treatment for individuals experiencing mental health concerns, substance use disorders, and co occurring conditions.
Rather than treating a diagnosis in isolation, our team works to understand the person experiencing it.
That allows treatment to address not only symptoms, but also the underlying patterns and experiences that may be contributing to them.
A Partial Hospitalization Program may be appropriate for someone who needs significant clinical support but does not require 24 hour residential or inpatient treatment.
PHP may be a good fit for someone who:
Every person’s situation is different. Our clinical team evaluates each client individually to determine the appropriate level of care and create a treatment plan based on their specific needs.
Treatment at Rainbow Hill is about more than simply attending groups.
We want to understand the whole person. That includes the experiences that brought you here, the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, the relationships that have shaped you, the ways you learned to cope, and the life you want to build moving forward.
Your treatment experience may include:
Individual therapy provides dedicated time with a clinician to explore personal challenges, identify patterns, process experiences, and work toward individualized treatment goals.
Group therapy creates opportunities to connect with others, develop new skills, gain perspective, and recognize that many of the things we struggle with do not have to be carried alone.
Trauma can influence mental health, substance use, relationships, identity, and the ways people learn to survive difficult experiences.
Our clinical approach recognizes the impact trauma can have while creating space for clients to work through those experiences safely and at an appropriate pace.
Depending on individual needs and clinical appropriateness, treatment at Rainbow Hill Recovery may incorporate therapeutic approaches such as DBT, Brainspotting, and other evidence based and experiential modalities.
Treatment is individualized because what works for one person may not be what another person needs.
For clients navigating substance use or co-occurring concerns, treatment can address the emotional, behavioral, relational, and environmental factors that contribute to substance use.
Recovery is not simply about removing a substance. It is also about understanding what role that substance played and developing healthier ways to cope, connect, and live.
When clinically appropriate, clients may receive psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and coordination of care as part of their overall treatment experience.
Treatment should translate into everyday life.
Clients work on skills that can support healthier relationships, stronger boundaries, emotional regulation, communication, recovery, independence, and long term stability.

Both a Partial Hospitalization Program and an Intensive Outpatient Program allow clients to receive structured treatment without living at a treatment facility.
The primary difference is the amount of support and time spent in treatment.
At Rainbow Hill Recovery, PHP generally provides approximately five hours of programming per day, five days per week.
IOP provides fewer treatment hours and may be appropriate once someone has developed greater stability and is ready for more independence.
For many clients, treatment happens in stages.
Someone may begin in PHP and eventually transition into IOP and then outpatient services as they build stability, confidence, and independence.
The goal is not to keep someone in intensive treatment forever.
The goal is to provide the right amount of support at the right time.
Rainbow Hill Recovery was created around a simple belief.
People heal better when they feel safe enough to be honest.
That means creating an environment where clients do not have to perform, pretend, or become the version of themselves they think a treatment provider wants to see.
Our community is intentionally inclusive.
LGBTQ+ individuals and allies receive care in an environment where people are respected for their identities, experiences, cultures, relationships, and backgrounds.
Because effective treatment is not one size fits all.
Neither are people.
PHP is often one part of a larger continuum of care.
As clients become more stable and require less daily support, they may transition into one of Rainbow Hill Recovery’s Intensive Outpatient Programs and eventually outpatient services.
Gradually stepping down allows clients to begin taking on more independence while continuing to have clinical support around them.
Progress does not mean suddenly doing everything alone.
It means slowly discovering that you can.
At Rainbow Hill Recovery, PHP generally consists of approximately five hours of programming per day, five days per week. The exact schedule and treatment plan may vary depending on individual clinical needs.

No. Some people enter PHP after completing residential or inpatient treatment, while others begin directly in PHP based on their symptoms, stability, and clinical needs.
There is no single length of treatment that is appropriate for everyone. Length of stay depends on clinical needs, progress, treatment goals, insurance coverage, and the level of support someone requires.
Yes. Rainbow Hill Recovery works with individuals experiencing mental health concerns, substance use disorders, and co occurring conditions. Treatment recommendations are based on each person’s individual needs.
Clients who no longer require the intensity of PHP may transition into IOP or another appropriate level of outpatient care. This allows support to decrease gradually as independence increases.
Many insurance plans include benefits for Partial Hospitalization Programs when treatment is medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan. Our admissions team can help review your benefits and explain what coverage may be available before treatment begins.
